Feb. 2, 2008: Beverly Hills places three at Pioneer League Championship Tournament
Beverly Hills High School placed three of its varsity wrestlers at the Pioneer League Championship Tournament hosted by
North Torrance High School today. Placing third in their respective weight classes for the Normans were senior captain Brian
Kim (145 lbs.), junior George Abraham (130 lbs.), and sophomore Klar Kuo (215 lbs.). The top three place winners in
each weight class automatically qualify for the CIF Coastal Division Playoff Tournament to be held at Marina High School in
Huntington Beach on Feb. 15 & 16. Placing in the league tournament is the first of three steps in post-season competition
toward making it to the state championship tournament in Bakersfield. Placing fourth for the Normans in the league
tournament and moving on as alternates for the CIF divisional round were sophomores Mikey Shlomof (125 lbs.), Matt
Flagel (171 lbs.), and juniors Bagus Rahadian (119 lbs.), Daniel Molayem (152 lbs.), and Joey Schwartz (189 lbs.).
Junior captain Weston Cage (285 lbs.) did not compete due to illness. Placing in the JV portion of the tournament for the
Normans were juniors Calvin Berman (2nd place, 119 lbs.) and Jason Naziri (third place, 135 lbs.), and senior Arman
Ariamanfar (third place, 145 lbs.).
Feb. 2, 2008: Normans freshman, Armand Farrokh, places second at Future Champs Frosh/Soph Tournament
Beverly Hills High School freshman, Armand Farrokh (171 lbs.), placed second at the annual Future Champs Frosh/Soph
Tournament held at North Torrance High School today.
Jan. 31, 2008: Beverly Hills drops last league dual meet to rival Santa Monica
The Beverly Hills High School varsity wrestling team dropped its last dual meet of the season to league rival Santa Monica by
a score of 57-12. Earning the sole win for the Normans was junior captain Weston Cage (285 lbs.) who improved his season
record to 14-1. Junior Calvin Berman picked up six points for Beverly Hills with a forfeit at 130 lbs. The Beverly Hills junior
varsity squad did defeat Santa Monica's JV team by a score of 29-21. Earning wins for the JV team were freshmen Matt
Yashar (160 lbs.) and Armand Farrokh (171 lbs.), and sophomore Gabe Benji (215 lbs.). The remainder of the points were
earned through forfeits.
Jan. 25, 2008: Beverly Hills falls to North Torrance
The Beverly Hills High School varsity wrestling team lost to state-ranked league opponent North Torrance yesterday by a
score of 68-9. The Normans gave up 30 points in forfeits due to injuries and illness. Earning wins for the Normans were
junior Bagus Rahadian (125 lbs.) and junior team captain Weston Cage (285 lbs.), who pinned his opponent to improve his
season record to 13-1. The North Torrance junior varsity squad also won beating Beverly Hills 59-18. Earning wins for the JV
team were sophomores Daniel Berman (152 lbs.) and Romeo Soofiani (285 lbs.) who both pinned their opponents, and
freshman Armand Farrokh (171 lbs.) who won by injury default. The Normans next take on league rival Santa Monica on
Thursday, Jan. 31, at Santa Monica High School at 3 p.m.
Jan. 16, 2008: Beverly Hills loses close one to South Torrance
Winning half of the 14 matches against league opponent South Torrance, the Beverly Hills varsity wrestling team came up just
short of capturing the win. The Normans were ahead by two points going in to the final bout, but South won the match with a
pin to earn six team points. The final score of the dual meet was 40-36 in favor of South Torrance. Earning wins for the
Normans were sophomores Mikey Shlomof (130 lbs.), Justin Brezhnev (145 lbs.), and Klar Kuo (215 lbs.), juniors Daniel
Molayem (160 lbs.) and Joey Schwartz (189 lbs.), and senior Brian Kim (152 lbs.). Junior team captain, Weston Cage,
picked up six points for the Normans with a forfeit at 285 lbs. The junior varsity squad defeated South Torrance 57-30.
Winning were freshmen Matt Grubman (112 lbs.), Kevin Youssian (130 lbs.), and Armand Farrokh (171 lbs.); sophomore
Daniel Berman (152 lbs.); junior Calvin Berman (125 lbs.); and senior Arman Ariamanfar. Sophomores Gabe Benji (215
lbs.) and Romeo Soofiani (285 lbs.) picked up forfeits for their team. The Normans next take on state-ranked North
Torrance at home at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, in their wrestling room.
Jan. 14, 2008: Beverly Hills places three at Best in Valley Tournament
The Beverly Hills varsity wrestling team placed three of its 12 wrestlers at last Saturday's Best in the Valley Tournament at
Chaminade College Prep in West Hills. Making it to the finals and placing second for the Normans was sophomore Klar Kuo
(215 lbs.) who was 2-1 on the day. Team captain and junior Weston Cage (285 lbs.) was also 2-1 on the day and had two
pins, but lost in the semi-final round to end up third. His loss to his CIF-ranked opponent from Bishop Amat was his first of the
season. Cage's record now stands at 11-1. Sophomore Justin Brezhnev (135 lbs.) finished in fifth place with a 3-2 record.
Fellow sophomore Matthew Flagel (171 lbs.) was also 3-2 on the day, but did not place. As a team, the Normans finished
12th among 20. The Normans face league opponent South Torrance tomorrow at home in their wrestling room at 3 p.m.
(Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008).
Jan. 11, 2008: Despite strong individual performances, Normans fall Torrance in league dual meet
The Beverly Hills varsity wrestling team lost its first league dual meet of the season to Torrance yesterday by a score of
40-22. Earning wins for the Normans were junior Bagus Rahadian (125 lbs.) with a major decision, and sophomores Mikey
Shlomof (130 lbs.) and Klar Kuo (215 lbs.) with impressive pins over their respective opponents. Torrance forfeited to junior
team captain Weston Cage (285 lbs.) to give the Normans an additional six points. Only giving up two pins, the rest of the
Beverly Hills varsity squad wrestled hard-fought matches to keep the score tight. The JV squad lost to Torrance 42-12, with
Gabe Benji (215 lbs.) and Romeo Soofiani (285 lbs.) winning by forfeit. The Normans varsity squad will compete tomorrow
at Chaminade's Best in the Valley Tournament, and then next take on league opponent South Torrance at home in their
wrestling room at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008.
